Music profile: Sardar Malik

(Feb 1930 - Jan 2006)

A whimsical happy man

sardar malik (22K)At the end of his life he was known as Anu Malik’s father but he was a gifted man in his own right. Youngest son and music composer Daboo malik recalls his recently deceased father fondly.

“Dad has left some 100 cassettes of compositions he’d done but never recorded. Now that he’s gone people are talking about him but there was so much he could’ve done”. Daboo promises that he will use all his clout and effort to set up a music academy in memory of his father.

Sardar Malik started life as dancer and even trained under the famed Uday Shankar at his residential school at Almora. But he was always musically inclined as well and had a good singing voice too. So he started doing both performing in Uday Shankar’s troupe as a singer and teaching choreography. But unfortunately for him the very first assignment he got for a princely sum of Rs3000/- put paid to his dance aspirations.  He became an unwitting victim of a controversy during that time and vowed never to do dance direction again.

He was then offered singing assignments as well as music composition which he did quite happily. But then the film Jugnu released wherein the late Mohammad Rafi sang the classic number ‘Yahan badla wafaa ka’. When Sardar Malik heard this beautiful number he at once decided that he’d give up singing for good because he could not match Rafi’s fluidity and ease. So voluntarily he decided never to sing again.

He started concentrating on music composing and created some beautiful masterpieces in films like Rain Basera, Stage, Saranga, Bachpan, Thokar, Maharani Padmini, Naag Jyoti, Abe Hayat, Poore Arab etc among others. However, he became the completely innocent victim of an argument between Sahir Ludhianvi and Lata Mangeshkar during a recording. This cost him his career.

After this he received only B grade films and spent the rest of his life teaching music. Often suffering due to lack of work and with 3 growing sons to look after, Sardar Malik spent his life in stoic suffering but he never let himself become bitter till the end. He found great joy in his sons’ success and remained till the end a whimsical happy man holding no grudges against anyone.

Anu ji , you have shown me a totally different dimention in my life , although I liked your composit
ions but had never given a deep thought to it ...untill one day when I saw you on TV saying that you
r father was the music director for "Saranga tere pyar" this song is the best I have ever heard in m
y life and had always wondered who might have composed it? I am so glad that you are his son but Its
extremely sad that such a great man is being known due to the good work of his son instead of the g
reat work that he himself did in his life. Now I feel this has changed my view about life - I feel
its only the ends(results) that matters and not the (means) great work so much. Your father increase
d my respect for you but unfortunately I would have never heard about Sir Malik if you were not you.
Regards Sujit

Its really heartening to know that he died known as Anu Malik's father but maybe only to the younger

if it is true that during end of his life he was known as anu maliks father, it is shokeable. undoub
tfully he was great composer. a participent of golden era of indian movie.

One of the true good composers of the old era. I have most of his songs. When I met Anu Malik in Sep
t 05, I asked him to send my regards to his father. I even wrote on SM in many of my reviews on the
net. Anu has learnt a lot from his father. This shows in the music.
