Movie profile: Amitabh Bachchan
A well-deserved Honor
Amitabh Bachchan continues to rule at the box office. Fans continue to crowd around him wherever he goes. He continues to do versatile roles. While his son Abhishek Bachchan continues to grasp at elusive stardom, Amitabh is the emperor of Bollywood, effortlessly churning out hit after hit. The latest feather in his cap is his National Award win for Black in the best actor category. Here, a look at Amitabh the star. Most Bollywood leading men kind of fade away in their late 40s. Except
Amitabh Bachchan. Like wine, this man becomes better and better as he grows older.
His National Award for Black in the best actor category has made him happy although the 64-year-old actor accepted the
news with his characteristic humility. He gives credit to director Sanjay Bhansali and the
entire cast, especially Rani Mukherjee, for supporting him so
well in the film. He is a little disappointed that Rani Mukherjee did not win the award in the Best Actress category for her role in the same movie although he
recognizes in the same breath that Sarika's exceptional performance in Parizania deserved the award too.
The National Awards' Committee jury took its time to make the announcement this year. Bachchan
says that he respects the jury and their decision to give him the award. It is an exceptional moment in his life and
while he holds Black very close to his heart, he mentions in the same breath that the best is yet to come! He
sounds like a young actor excited about his next role, not like an actor in his 60s at all. It is this dedication and
professionalism that has made Bachchan a phenomenon in Bollywood. In an era where actors think nothing of turning up
late for schedules and take liberal breaks at the cost of the film, this veteran actor turns
up early on the sets and concentrates on his work without getting distracted.
There were rumors that the jury was pressured into giving the award for Amitabh, an accusation he angrily refutes. The jury is composed of independent individuals who decide
on the award based on a film's merit and cannot be pressured into giving awards. He considers it an honor to be given
this award and says that such rumors affect any actor. His performance in Black is an exceptional one and he does not
understand why such controversies surround the jury's decision.
It is difficult to talk to Amitabh Bachchan without mentioning that
his family is now a 'brand'. Abhishek Bachchan, a leading actor, is his son and the
beautiful Aishwarya Rai, is a leading actress. The threesome
rakes in crores endorsing various products. They plan to cash in on their marketability
with a family concert next year. Aishwarya Rai, his
daughter-in-law, was the target of extremely hurtful criticism prior to her wedding to Abhishek Bachchan. It was her future father-in-law who stood by her side and provided the support she
needed while handling the publicity and also making the transition from a single, successful actress to daughter-in-law
in a famous film industry family. Bachchan Sr. has only words of praise for her, making us envious of Aishwarya for having such a great father-in-law.
He is working with Abhishek and Aishwarya
in reel life too. The shooting of Sarkar 2, he confirms, is going very well.
While they are family, they work very well together on the sets and are complete professionals. On the sets, the
director is king. Once the lights dim, though, Amitabh is king of his famous family.
