Movie profile:Mallika Sherawat
Mallika Sherawat. The very name evokes controversy. The extra-sexy lady, who made her debut in Bollywood in Murder four years ago, seems destined for bigger things - like Hollywood, the controversies not withstanding.
Mallika Sherawat made her debut in Bollywood four years ago. Her extremely frank interviews and ultra-sexy poses raised many an eyebrow in an industry known for its double standards. Meanwhile, movie buffs who read her interviews wondered if she would go the Mamta Kulkarni way. A flash in the pan and disappear forever from the silver screen.
However, the lady seemed to be made of sterner stuff. She learnt to tone down her interviews and started to actively look out for projects that would enhance her star value. Some forgettable films later, she landed The Myth with Jackie Chan in 2005 in which she played an Indian princess. It wasn’t such a great role but it got fantastic publicity for Mallika amidst rumors of an affair with Chan and a chance to strut her stuff on the red carpet at Cannes.
After films like Darna Zaroori Hai and Pyar ke Side Effects, lady luck smiled on Mallika once again. She did an item song in Maniratnam’s Guru. While the lead pair Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan was in the news for their onscreen histrionics and off screen romance, Mallika quietly proved that she could hold her own among big stars even through a single scene appearance. The lady, while still displaying a remarkable penchant for getting into controversies, also told the world that there was more to her than her body - she could act!
The biggest break in her career was yet to come. She is now in the news for landing a role in Unveiled. The story is about a Muslim woman and the men in her life. Unveiled will be directed by Bill Bannerman who earlier worked as an assistant director to Clint Eastwood. Stars in the caliber of Penelope Cruz and Hillary Swank wanted the role. Leading Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and starlet Shilpa Shetty were also considered. Finally, Mallika got lucky.
Mallika is predictably excited about her role. This is the first time a Hollywood director is having an Indian actress play the lead role in his film and she is not going to let any stone unturned in preparing for the role. She wants to be an international star, she says, and this is the first step. A great, big first step.
