Badr: Singing the Devdas tune

That the music of Devdas is extremely popular is old hat. The lyrics have contributed in no small way in this. Who, then, is the lyricist of Devdas? Nusrat Badr. Unassuming, he prefers to remain in the background even though Devdas is very much ‘in’ now.

Nusrat is a simple person who has contributed to many albums including Pankaj Udhas’ Mehal, Talat Aziz’s Irshaad and more. He carved a niche for himself in the world of ghazals after which he made his debut as film lyricist in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. The rest is history. Nusrat is extremely lucky since his debut itself is a huge hit. For Badr, says that Devdas is his dream come true. He is extremely grateful to Bhansali for putting so much faith in him and helping a comparatively new lyricist like him. Especially for a huge project like Devdas.

Bhansali gave the script of Devdas to Badr and asked him to see the previous versions of Devdas too. Badr, however, chose not to and decided he would compose the songs in his own style. It seems to have worked because the songs have been praised for portraying very complex feelings. He attributes his creativity to the Almighty and says that all his writing seems to come from a power above.

Badr admits that Devdas will be very hard to beat and that it is a landmark in his career. He is very proud to have been a part of Bollywood’s most expensive production and hopes that if he works for a bigger film, it will also be with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Let’s wish him luck in his career and fulfillment of his dreams.
