The Music Goes on in Mumbai

Mumbai terror 08 (21K)The November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks have made a deep impression in the minds of its cosmopolitan inhabitants. For law and order personnel, it means more vigilance, increased security, and sleepless nights. Still, the city has returned to normalcy surprisingly fast and we applaud its spirit. However, music fans were disappointed when they heard the news that the Banganga and Elephanta Festivals, which feature several music performances, would not be held this year due to security issues.

However, there is plenty to cheer them. For starters, Pancham Nishad and the Indian Heritage Society of Bombay held a two-day concert from March 7 - 8 titled Mumbai Sanskruti. Featuring Ustad Rashid Khan, Louis Banks, Sivamani, Niladri Kumar and Selva Ganesh, the concert is sure to attract music lovers like bees to honey. Ustad Rashid Khan performed on the first; the second day featured Asian Electrik with Sivamani, Louis Banks, Niladri Kumar on his electric zitar, and Selva Ganesh on the kanjira. Among others, the band played songs from Sivamani's solo album, Mahaleela. The audience was delighted.

This is Mumbai's way of showing that it would live on and no attack could ruin its spirit. It is impossible to not admire and salute this spirit which is part of those who inhabit the city and make it the thriving cultural center it is.
