Music review-Gadar- Ek Prem
Katha
Album
Title : GADAR
The movie is in the news for all the wrong reasons. If anything, it deserves to be discussed and praised for its fitting period music, not the various accusations people are throwing at it. The unique rustic Punjabi feel is its most attractive feature. And the composer, Uttam Singh, has not let down the listener.
Uttam Singh was earlier noticed for his work in Dil To Pagal Hai, but Gadar is completely different in theme and presentation. While DTPH was a contemporary love story, Gadar is basically a period film, even if a love story.
The album begins with the
eminently-hummable and likable Udja kaala kawan, sung nicely by Udit
Narayan. The song has a strong folk flavour and immediately takes you to the
lush fields of Punjab, so effective is its tone and presentation. The song
keeps
Hum juda ho gaye starts off with heavy orchestration and some equally high-pitched singing by Preeti Uttam, he composer's daughter, who is later joined by Udit and Rakesh P. Those familiar with Tamil film music can trace a lot of Illayaraja influences in this song, especially with the chorus portions.
Main nikla gaddi leke is an energetic song meant specifically to showcase Sunny Deol, who plays a young Sikh truck driver in the movie. Ajay Chakrabarty displays in Aan milo sajna the same form he displayed while singing for Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram, which had music by Illayaraja. It is very happy to listen to Parveen Sultana after a long time in a Hindi movie.
Preeti Uttam is at home singing the
traditional marriage songs and does a good job. Musafir jaane wale, by
Udit and Preeti again, is a sad song with folk music. A very good and welcome
effort by Uttam Singh, who deserves praise for treading a lonely path in this
age of electronic sounds and music. © HindiSong.com 2001
