Movie Preview: Girl Friend
Directed by: Karan Razdan Cast: Ashish Chowdhry, Isha Koppikar and Amrita Arora With films becoming bolder than before, filmmakers are experimenting with new subjects that have not been thought of so far. Karan Razdan is one such filmmaker, who has dared to touch a controversial and contentious issue. After releasing Hawas, which deals with extra marital affair in a bold manner, Razdan is all set to make fresh waves in Bollywood. The title ‘Girlfriend’ might suggest you of a love story revolving around a girl. It is a love story indeed but it is a different love. It is a deep love between two young girls. They love each other just as a boy and a girl love each other. Yes, the story explores the concept of lesbianism. Let us look at the synopsis. Amrita and Isha are childhood friends. Isha, having a troubled childhood, is a quite obsessive character. She is too possessive with her friend, Amrita Arora. They are intimate friends- intimacy in its fullest sense. Things take a turn when Ashish Chowdhry enters in Amrita’s life. Isha’s possessiveness towards Amrtita turns into obsession. Isha’s relationship with her girlfriend it obviously more than just a platonic relationship. Amrita Arora is caught between her friend and her boyfriend. She loves both of them. Now she is in a great dilemma. Though the theme tends to create expectations of hot scenes between the two girls, the director Karan Razdan assures that there is no sexy portrayal of the relationship. The director chooses to deal the subject in a subtle and sensitive manner, it seems. The film tries to portray and explore the shades of friendship, love and womanhood. Whether the audience will digest such themes is yet to be seen. It may be an alarm to the men who tend to ignore the feelings of women. Girlfriend is slated to be released during May.
