Movie Review: Masti
Following HAWAS and MURDER, MASTI too deals extra-marital relationship but with a difference. While the earlier films deal the subject seriously, MUSTI handles it with a touch of comedy. MASTI has come out as a delightful and witty farce on the subject of sex. Meet [Vivek Oberoi], Amar [Ritesh Deshmukh] and Prem [Aftab Shivdasani] are close friends since college days. Life takes a turn after all three have married. They slowly realize that life is not of happy and fun alone. They discover the hell behind the heaven. They experience the bickering behind the bliss and the agony behind the ecstasy. The marital life of the three is not so exciting as expected to be. They are frustrated with the boring routine and want to change the scenario. They want some masti and decide to seek it from outside the boundaries of marriage life. The trio plans to try something exciting and exchange the experience after some time. In search of fun and excitement, they indulge in crazy and amusing adventure. But before they find anything exciting, the adventure backfires. They end up in trouble. They are under suspicion in a murder case. Sikander [Ajay Devgan], a cop suspects that they have some role in a murder. On the other hand they are caught in a position where their wives could suspect their fidelity. Indra Kumar is back with his light entertainment techniques. MASTI is full of light moments that ensure full-fledged entertainment. Indra does not waste any time. Soon after the characters are introduced, the film gets down to business the moment, the film gets in to the business straight away. Three friends decide to look beyond their wives for intimate moments. The adventures of the three protagonists are quite uproarious, especially between Ritesh Deshmukh and Rakhi Sawant. A sidetrack similar to ‘Kantaben’ [KAL HO NAA HO] has been woven in the story to keep the humor going. This emerges as one of the highlights of this comedy venture. The film gathers further speed with Lara Dutta entering the scene. The interval point touches a height as the story slips in to the crime mould. The pace, however, gets disturbed in the post-interval portions despite some funny and entertaining moments. The climax is relatively tame and slightly disappointing. Since MASTI is designed to be out and out comedy entertainer, the screenplay writers Milap Zaveri and Tushar Hiranandani make no attempts to give any ‘meaning’ or logic to the proceedings. They have created plenty of hilarious moments without bothering about the logic and ensure pleasure through out the film. The way they have treated the issue of adultery with fun is quite enjoyable. Zaveri deserves special appreciation for the witty one-liners. Director Indra Kumar seems to be in form this time around. Comedy is an easy thing to create but Indra has done it with ease. The film looks fresh and most of scenes created by the director go well with the times. Anand Raaj Anand’s music is fine. ‘Ek Kunwara’, ‘Chori Chori’ and ‘Chain Khuli Ki’ are peppy songs. Though Anand Raj Anand has sung ‘Dil De Diya Hai’ excellently, the song acts as a speed breaker in the final stages. Mazhar Kamran’s cinematography is outstanding. Aftab Shivdasani steals the show in a Jim Carrey type of character. Aftab proves his talent in doing comedy roles. His timing for comic sequences is just perfect. His performance is quite enjoyable. Ritesh Deshmukh too has come out with incredible performance. He does justice to the role he has taken. He showed some improvement as an actor in his second film, OUT OF CONTROL. In MUSTI, he has shown remarkable improvement. Though Vivek Oberoi tries his best to render a good performance, he does not seem to be at ease. He does reasonably well in a few scenes but fails to impress with his overall performance. Ajay Devgan does well in a role that seems tailor-made. Lara Dutta’s performance is convincing. Amongst the wives, Genelia stand out. Amrita Rao comes second while Tara Sharma doesn’t impress at all. On the whole, MASTI has many plus points. The impressive star cast, strong performances, peppy music, well-written script and well-executed scenes make the film a surefire winner.
