Inspired by FRENCH KISS, the makers have also seeked inspiration from DILWALE DULHANIA
LE JAYENGE. The film begins on an ordinary note and throughout the first half, barring a
few individual scenes, it lacks the grip so essential in a love story. The second half has
plenty of emotional and fun-filled moments, but the goings-on get so predictable that a
solid impact is missing. And that's mainly due to the scirpt.
As a director, Aness Bazmee's flair for visuals and handling of emotional scences
deserves full priase, but as far as the screenplay is concerned, there are a lot of loose
ends and loopholes. To cite a few instances, the aircraft song is ridiculous and can
easily be deleted when Anjan Srivastava tells Kajol of the family's problems, Ajay instead
is shown devoting full time to make Kajol's fiance Bijay Anand jealous the climax is
repetitive and a similar ending has been witnessed in the past in DIL, AASHIQUI, DILWALE
DULHANIA LE JAYENGE and more recently, in AUR PYAAR HO GAYA. Even otherwise, Om Puri's
characterisation is not too strong Even if this track wouldn't have been there, it
wouldn't have made a difference to the script.
Coming to the plus points, a few emotional scenes in the second half are worth
watching. Kajol's falling in love with Ajay has been shown with utmost care, without going
overboard. Visually speaking, Nirmal Jani's camerawork is top class. Be it the rustic
charms of the village or the exotic beaches, the atmosphere has been captured to
perfection. Jatin-Lalit's music is of a mixed variety. While the title track, `Ajnabi
Mujhko Itna Batade' and `Jab Kisiki Taraf Dil Jhukne Lage' are creditable, the remaining
numbers are very mediocre.
Performance-wise, Ajay Devgan acts his part with utmost sincerity, but had his
character been better defined, the impact would've been stronger. Kajol is truly
outstanding and affirms that she is amongst the finest actresses on the Indian screen
today. Bijay Anand has screen presence and does a good job. Kashmira Shah's character has
vampish shades, nevertheless she does her part well. Om Puri is, like always, dependable.
Tiku talsania, Harish Patel, Anjan Srivastava, Mushtaq Khan, Ghanshyam, Ashish Balram
Nagpal, Reema, Anant Mahadevan and Asha Sharma support well.
Production values are lavish. The background score is upto the mark. The sound effects
are proper. Special effects (Rajtaru) are good.
Direction of Raju is alright. Cinematography of Sanjay Malvankar is upto the mark.
Dailouges are witty at places.
